The artistic, highly detailed mosaics are hand-cut and painstakingly placed to reflect the treasured heritage of past cultures. From the mosaic stone floors of homes in ancient Pompeii to the incredibly-detailed ceiling murals that adorn Venice's St. Mark's Cathedral, mosaic art has captured the imagination of artists for millennia.

Thankfully, such artistry is still alive today.

While the earliest known mosaics used pebbles, seashells, ivory and other natural materials to create pictures and geometric designs, the height of mosaic artistry in Ancient Greece and Rome relied on hand-cut natural stone and glass, sometimes accented with gold and other metals.

The contemporary work of Neille Olsen represents a remarkable understanding of time-honored techniques and a distinctive vision that portrays birds, flowers and abstract design in a studied symmetry to lend life and movement to each piece. By interspersing sparkling hand-cut glass with tiny pieces of natural marble and slate, each design is alive with form and color, whether distinguished by a single palette or bursting with energetic color.

Vibrant reds, greens and blues characterize the floral and bird designs of this Tucson-based artist, while other designs like Tuscan Lemon and Black Olive call to mind the sunny climate of Southern Europe and a Mediterranean lifestyle. Other designs, executed in soothing earth tones, are reminiscent of windswept plains or the changing desert dunes of North Africa and the desert Southwest. Still others, with watery turquoise and pale blue glass speak of rivers, lakes and seas, while dramatic opal glass or glass and slate combos make us think of nighttime skies and glowing stars. A distinctive ruby glass design looks like glowing firelight.

The mosaic tiles are set permanently in a proprietary blend of stone that's lighter and more durable than traditional concrete. Larger pieces might have up to 3,500 pieces incorporated into the design, each one individually cut and set in place.
